IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) Flea Collars
The main advantage of Insect Growth Regulator flea collars is that they break the flea lifecycle. Young fleas won’t grow into adult phase where they can breed and will die off before they can lay eggs. Main chemical componetns of IGRs are hydoprene and methoprene, which distrupt normal life cycle of insects, and prevent their development. They are however non-toxic to pets.
IGR flea collars are non-toxic to pets and people and are safe way of preventing and controling flea infestations. IGR components are also used for some other treatments in pills and other oral consuming medicine for pets. Some similar oral medications are Insect Development Inhibitors (IDIs). IDIs prevent flea eggs from hatching, while IGRs prevent flea larvae from turning to adult flea. Insect Growth Regulators are also used in insecticide foggers and premise sprays to treat environmental flea issues.
Since IGR only prevents reproduction, but may not actually kill all the adult fleas and ticks, it’s a good idea to use combination of flea prevention and treatment. Some flea collars use combined methods of flea control, insecticide kills adult fleas and IGR components prevent their reproduction. For ultimate population control, flea collars can be combined with other methods and products for flea treatment.
